feeling a little nostalgic

So I was speaking with a friend of mine and we started to talk about retro games such as the original sonic games, tetris, space invaders.....and we mentioned how all the sounds in the games are iconic such as the sounds for mario and sonic's jump and the ring and coin sounds for mario and sonic.

another thing that cropped up was Final Fantasy and some of the most memorable music from the series such as Arith's theme and Sephiroth's theme from FF7, Eyes on me from FF 8 and To Zanakand from FF 10. there are theme's from the games that are also Iconic to the series such as the Chocobo theme, the Victory theme and the Final Fantasy Prelude.

Something that i've been thinking about...is haw games change now days.....sure graphics improve but for example.....the lates final fantasy games.......the graphics are amazing.....however for the music and sounds to me....arn't that memorable to me at all......there's no prelude...and the classic victory theme was scrapped. Personally I feel theres no song's that are actually memeorable to me, The same could be said about the latest Sonic games....however Sonic does still keep his classic jumo sound from what I remember.

Ah well this is just things I have on my mind that might help with my essay and I thought I would get them down before I forget.

I need to update more often

Things have been crazy recently since I just got back from Japan and then I had to move all my stuff to my Uni house and i've been suffering from jet lag pretty badly. Anyway theres not much I can really say atm however I remember when I was first telling the idea of my essay to the tutor....and we ended up discussing about  old retro games such as Space invaders and how one of the first things that come to mind are the sounds and the theme...well...the music.

Yesterday I was talking with my brother and we ended up talking about how the main theme of Tetris is also iconic....later on in the day I was talking with one of my house mates and I asked her if she knew the Mario theme. She replied to me she didn't, however after I hummed a little to her she remembered it almost instantly.

Often there are times when me and one of my house mates are playing a game and then one of the songs we both like come it we instantly start to sing along with it.

I guess i'll get to the point. There are often games that have music the can sometimes be even more iconic then a character or maybe even some cases the game itself, There are also times that a song/theme from a game can bring people together. Then again it could just be my own idle speculation.

Blogging day

Another blogging day and I again keep forgetting to update sadly. Well I went to visit the Studio Ghibli museum yesterday and I watched 2 animated shorts that they show there that aren't shown anywhere outside the museum itself. Both had no dialogue but one had no sound at all. The first animation  was about the evolution that had no sound but it was also on display and had no sound. The second animation was in the mini theatre and had music and sounds and I found myself able to understand what was happening even without dialogue. Not only me but everyone in the room it was a lovely short animation. the animation was about a man made of Dough and an Egg Princess. I can't find the video but I can post images of it.

more blogging

a day of not having that much to add towards this blog. The only thing that comes to mind really is the sounds I hear at the Tokyo Train stations. It's quite interesting really at the stations as a new train comes and goes there are all sorts of little tunes and jingles that play. I'm not really sure what it means but I find it quite interesting. I managed to record a video going between stations heading towards Akiharbra that I shall link to.

Blog update

X_X I need to update more frequently but it's kind of hard while i'm away >.<.

Anyway I mentioned Rudolf Arnheim in an earlier post. Rudolf was a German-born author, art and film theorist and perceptual psychologist. He was born in July 15, 1904  and died in June 9, 2007. In his earlier years he wrote a book that was named  Film als Kunst (Film as Art)  that was published in 1932. This was his first book, however shortly after the book was released, Adolf Hitler came to power, and because Arnheim was Jewish, the sale of his book was no longer allowed. He shortly moved to Italy where he published a book entitled Radio: The Art of Sound in 1936. Both of these books I will attempt to obtain so that I can use for my Essay.

Another book I will be looking at is Michel Chion's  Audio-Vision -- Sound on Screen Chions book deals with  the functions of film sound in many ways, including music.  and discusses theories of film music on the use of sound in film in psychological states and effects.

These Authors and texts I will be referencing in my Essay although these books go on about films I will be discussing about video games. Anyway I will do my best to update again Asap although I'm having some difficulties with time difference and i'm still suffering the effects of jet lag.

Day 4 of blogging

Sadly I missed the last couple of day's i've missed blogging as i've been travelling to Japan and i'm currently suffering jet lag. However I managed to get blogging on here. Anyway something popped into my head that was brought up in a lecture and that is Ruldolf Arnheim's view about the negative effect of dialogue when introduced to cinema in 1920'1930. Thinking about it....I can see things that I kind of agree on , Anyway I'll talk more about  later

Day 4 of Blogging

Another day of not gettimg much done, however I have found a video with the Death scene of Aeries ( aka Arith ) in Final Fantasy 7. Back when this first came out this scene had such a huge impact on a lot of players and brought them to tears. In a manga I remember reading in a section where the author wrote about themself's they admitted that even they had cried at the death of Aeries and once I went back and watched this scene I must admit it was a touching moment and I remember crying the first time I watched it.
